Resources for Working in Vienna

General Information

Travel or limited stay visas for tourists or for visiting relatives do not entitle the visitors to work. Those caught in illegal employment are subject to immediate deportation, fines, and a residence ban lasting up to ten years.

Austria has a foreign labor quota that limits the number of foreign nationals allowed to work in Austria. It is controlled by the upper limit system.

For persons not employed by an international organization offering work and residence entitlements that allow otherwise, foreign nationals outside of the EEA area (EU countries and Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein) planning to work in Vienna will need the following certificates:

Certificate of Residence

A Settlement Permit (Niederlassungsbewilligung) or a Residence Permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung). For questions regarding residence regulations, contact the customer service center of Municipal Department 35 - Immigration and Citizenship, Registry Offices (MA 35)

Certificate of Employment (One of Four Types)

  • Employment permit (Beschäftigungsbewilligung) - granted to individual foreigners following application by the prospective employer
  • Work permit (Arbeitserlaubnis) - can be applied for after 52 weeks of legal employment with the Beschäftigungsbewilligung
  • Certificate of exemption (Befreiungsschein) - provides one with an equal status to an employed Austrian citizen
  • Freedom of movement (Freizügigkeitsbestätigung) - permits one to work with any employer, in any type of employment, located anywhere in Austria
