If you wish to use your current phone internationally, check with your mobile phone service provider for details. If you need less expensive or temporary options, consider a "pay-as-you-go" phone, as little as 30 Euros to start.
A mobile phone is called a "handy". If you plan to move to Vienna and get a bank account, a phone contract may be best. Otherwise, you can get a "Go" phone and recharge your credit when you get low by purchasing an "aufladen" code. You can get these codes from cell phone shops, supermarkets, and post offices. Just ensure they carry your brand first.
In Austria, typically incoming calls and text messages are free. You only pay for outgoing calls and texts.
You may be aware of "unlocking" or "jailbreaking" an existing phone that you bring into the country with you. If you plan to do this, know that you are doing so at your own risk!
