To plan your route from place to place, use Wiener Linien's online utility that allows entry of stop names or addresses in the "To" and "From" fields as well as your Time and Date of Arrival or Departure. (Click English in the grey bar at the top.) Subway / Streetcar system runs 6am - midnight.
Other means of transportation around Vienna include Taxis, Faxis (Pedicabs), and Fiakers (Horse-drawn carriages)
Self-serve bike rental posts, City Bikes, are scattered all over the city ( PDF map). Use a credit card. Each first hour is free and the hour starts over if you park your bike for 15 minutes. Makes for a great alternative means of public transport.
Vienna is also a great city for walking. Google "Vienna Walking Tours" in the Google Search below and you will get the idea. The city is quite small and you may be amazed at how quickly you are able to get places on foot!
