It is fairly easy to get by only speaking English in Vienna. People from all over the world come here and English is typically the default language among people foreign to each other. The school system requires students to take a foreign language and English is the most often taken course, so most of the younger people speak it well. The two most common answers to "Do you speak English?" seem to be, "Of course!" and "A little". Those answering "A little" often proceed to speak English quite well.
