About Tipping

It is common to "round up" the amount of the bill. If the bill is 4.20 Euros you would round up to 5.00 Euros. For larger bills, you round up to the next "even" amount that equals about 10%. Leaving money sit on the table may be considered rude. Give it directly to the server. Saying "danke" can mean the server will keep the change, so be careful if you're handing over more than you wish to leave. Tell the server how much to give you back.

Typical Viennese Cuisine

Typical Viennese cuisine is heavy and rich and often quite high in cholesterol, which to some of us equals delicious! Picture piles of meats, sausages, dumplings, and sauerkraut.

  • Tafelspitz - common boiled beef dish
  • Fleischknödeln - potato dumplings filled with meat
  • Grammelknödeln - dumplings stuffed with pork scratchings
  • Wiener Schnitzel - typically tenderized veal which is sliced thin, then beaten flat, dipped in egg and breadcrumbs, fried in butter, and seasoned with lemon, although variations with ham, chicken, and turkey can also be found
  • Konditorei - Austrian pastry shops that you'll seem to pass every few yards (or meters...) serving up delicious brioches, croissants, filled rolls, and numerous pastries
  • Würstelstand - rather inexpensive streets booths commonly located near public transportation junctions serving fatty, juicy varieties of sausages and meats and often pizza, soft drinks, water, and beer
  • Heurigen - wine taverns in the local wine growing areas; heuer meaning "this year" - indicating young wines from the previous harvest and from a single vineyard per Heurigen; it is also popular to drink gespritzt - the wine with a splash of soda or mineral water
